The Nuremberg Code

Following the Nuremberg trials in 1947, the Nuremberg Code was developed which put patient consent at the heart of clinical research.

'The voluntary consent of the human subject is absolutely essential'

The Nuremberg Code goes on to describe many of the ethical standards that later became enshrined in the Declaration of Helsinki in 1964.
