Short Term Study - Definition

Short-term study means: a study of short duration with widely used, routine techniques.

The OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice are general and were originally designed to define the way in which long-term toxicity studies should be planned, conducted, and reported. Their expansion to cover other study types made it necessary for the OECD to standardise Good Laboratory Practice requirements for some special study types, such as short-term studies.

However, their very nature means that they encompass a wide variety of study types and therefore it is very difficult to arrive at a meaningful, all-embracing definition of ‘short-term’.

Hence the definition of a short-term study leaves the time element open to interpretation.
