The Sponsor is a key role in Good Laboratory Practice and is defined by the OECD as:

‘Sponsor means an entity which commissions, supports and/or submits a non-clinical health and environmental safety study’

The Sponsor (which may include an individual, partnership, corporation, government agency, etc) will provide the general specification for the study and should understand the Principles of Good Laboratory Practice.

In particular, the Sponsor should recognise that the responsibility for the whole study, including the validity of the data and final report remains with the Study Director no matter where the work is carried out.
